Carved manzanita burl dish (about 6" in length) made by Susan Labiste:
The zoomorphic design was suggested by the shape of the burl. The red heartwood in the belly of the dish left me feeling like I was inside the bear. Seeing Yurok dugout canoes this summer with heart and kidneys carved into them inspired my work on the dish. I left him his heart and kidneys and hope a little of him lives on in the dish.
The wood was gathered from a roadside where seasonal brush clearing activities left a pile of refuse. The burl has been submerged in water for over a year to prevent checking. Manzanita has a tendency to crack. Some checking was already in progress by the time the dish was completed. We will see if oiling it and keeping it in a plastic bag as it dries helps minimize the cracks.
