Tule House Project

"Outside Educators (Dino Labiste & Sue Labiste) coordinated with the Math/Science Nucleus to build an Ohlone-style tule house at the Tule Ponds, Tyson Lagoon Wetland Center in Fremont. High school students, who needed community service hours, and volunteers helped with the gathering of the materials and the construction of the tule house."

One day before the twining project, we rehydrated the cut tules after they had dried during the past weeks. On July 9, 2005, we began twining the base of the tules to create mats for the outside thatching. Also, on that Saturday, we added the first layer of tule thatching to the willow frame.
